Conditional sentences
“if I saved money, I would be able to buy new clothes for the party. but, I don’t save money, huh I use bored dress for the party next week.” So guys, I guess you ever said this expression. It can be regretting, imagining, or maybe it is true fact. That is conditional sentences. So today’s lesson we are going to talk about conditional sentences. Here we go!
(a) Water freezes (will freeze) if the temperature goes below 32 degrees F/ 0 degree C.
(b) If I have enough time, I write to my parents every week.
(c) If I have enough time tomorrow , I will write to my parents.
(d) If I had enough time now, I would write to my parents.
(e) If Sulhan were here right now, he would help us.
(f) If I had had enough time, I would have written to my parents yesterday (in truth, I did not have enough time, so I didn’t write to them.
Explanation:
In (a) either the simple present or the simple future is used in the result clause to express an established, predictable fact.
In (b)the simple present is used in the result clause to express a habitual activity or situation.
In (c) the simple future is used in the result clause when the sentence concerns a particular activity or situation in the future.
In (d) in truth, I don’t have enough time.
In (e) in truth, Sulhan is not here right now. Were is used for both singular and plural subjects. Was (I, she, he, it) is sometimes used in very informal speech but is not generally considered grammaticaly acceptable.
In (f) in truth, I did not have enough time. The auxiliary vebs are always contracted in speech. “if you’d told me, I would’ve helped you (OR: I’d’ve helped you)”
Using mixed time in conditional sentence
Frequently the time in the “if clause” and the time in the “result clause” are different: one clause may be in the present and the other in the past. Notice that past and present times are mixed in the sentence in the following example below.
True : I did not eat breakfast several hours ago, so I am hungry now.
Conditional : if I had eaten breakfast several hours ago, I would not be hungry now.
True : he is not a good student, he did not study for the test yesterday.
Conditional : if he were a good student, he would have studied for the test.
Explanation :
It has two structures in mixed conditional, in determining when to use mixed conditional, it depends on the condition. (the 1st structure) When the truth in indepent clause use past tense, so the if clause we use past perfect tense, like in (a) and (b).

When the truth in dependent clause use present tense, so the result clause we use would + base form (simple form).
For the 2nd structure:
When the truth in independent clause use present simple, so in the if clause we use simple past.

When the truth in dependent clause is simple past, so we use would have + past participle result clause.

So the 2nd structure is:
The word “if”’ can be omitted, but there is a few different structure. Taking example “if I were you, I would accept their invitation” it changes to “Were I you, I would accept their invitation”, or “if he had gone to the doctor, the cut on his hand wouldn’t have gotten infected” changes to “had he gone to the doctor, the cut on his hand wouldn’t have gotten infected.”
(if I were you = were I you)
(if he had gone = had he gone)
